The most important condition for the abundant flowering of the red rose bushes is a place for planting. Roses are sensitive to light and heat, therefore, they must be planted in places that are well-lit and protected from cold winds. The best place is the southern and south-eastern side of the garden because the roses enjoy the morning and the afternoon sun. Shady places are suitable only for climbing roses varieties.

Planting roses – roots, holes, and soil

The spring is the recommended season to plant your rose garden. Roses are heat-loving plants, and once the soil has warmed up well, and the buds have not yet blossomed, you can start planting. Planting in autumn is risky because not every rosebush can fully take root before the first frosts coming and often perishes.

Carefully examine the roots and cut all the damaged parts leaving the remaining roots no more than 20 cm length before the actual planting. Shorten the shoots on the bush leaving the strong ones with 6 buds, medium with three, and weak and dried cut completely.

The planting hole for the rose should be wide and deep so that the roots of the bush have enough free space after planting. It is very important to cover the grafting with a 5-7cm layer of soil.  Tramp down the soil around the bush and pour it abundantly (a bucket of water for the bush).

Cover the seedlings with non-woven material protecting from the bright spring sun. Dissociate the shoots and remove the shelter when the ground is fully warmed, and the size of the shoots will reach about 5 cm.

The soil is prepared in advance. It is fertilized with mineral and organic fertilizers. The best organic fertilizer for roses is manure, and the first top dressing with a complex mineral fertilizer should be thorough, but not more than 15-20 grams per bush. The excess dose will have a negative effect on roses.

For the spring planting of roses, the soil is prepared in the autumn. Everything is quite simple:

  • dig up capacious holes to a depth of 1.2 m and half a meter in diameter
  • fill them with drainage (branches, large rubble, expanded clay)
  • a mixture of garden and humus soil put on top
  • add mineral fertilizers.

The holes for autumn planting should be prepared month and a half before. The best seedlings are plants of the first two years. Cut off the tips of the shoots to stimulate the growth of rose, when planting.

It is recommended to observe the interval between plants from half a meter to one meter depending on the size and rate of growth of the particular variety. In general, the distance between the bushes is determined individually.
